The situation escalated after Barcelona president Joan Laporta indicated interest in Alvarez, suggesting Atletico might be open to selling him to Arsenal. In response, Atletico firmly stated there is a '0% chance' of Alvarez being sold to Barcelona.

In a statement, Atletico Madrid's board reiterated their support for the decision, emphasizing that the club is open to professional transfer negotiations but found Barcelona's approach lacking in respect and professionalism. They expressed hope that Alvarez would understand the club's position and continue to focus on his contributions.
