Atyrau Masters Sees Early Upsets as Top Seeds Fall
The Atyrau Open 2026 is currently underway in Kazakhstan from October 12 to 20, serving as the third stage of the Kazakhstan Chess Cup. The event features two sections, Masters and Open, with a total prize fund of around US$100,000.
Both tournaments are conducted over nine rounds using the Swiss system, with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from the first move. Draws are not permitted before move 30, and games are broadcast with a 15-minute delay to ensure fair play. The final round is set for October 20.
Organized by the Kazakhstan Chess Federation with support from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the tournament is taking place in Atyrau, a city located at the confluence of the Ural River and the Caspian Sea. The Masters section has attracted several grandmasters, including top seed Shamsiddin Vokhidov from Uzbekistan and second seed Leon Luke Mendonca from India. Both players faced unexpected defeats in the first two rounds, with Vokhidov losing to Nguyen Duc Hoa and Mendonca falling to Sergey Sklokin-Bagiyan. Currently, Pranav Anand and Khagan Ahmad are tied for first place after three rounds, with thirteen players closely trailing behind.
