Audi Considers Outside Investment in F1 Team While Retaining Control
Audi is exploring the possibility of attracting outside investment in its Formula 1 team while ensuring it retains operational control. CEO Gernot Döllner indicated that the company is receiving interest from potential partners who may want to acquire a minority stake in the team.
Döllner noted that any new shareholders would not have a say in the team's management. Currently, Qatar's sovereign wealth fund holds a significant minority stake, estimated at about one-third. Despite financial adjustments within the Volkswagen Group, Döllner assured that the F1 program is fully financed and is expected to break even before the decade concludes.
He emphasized the necessity for quick decision-making in Formula 1, which requires a centralized control structure. Audi is also open to discussions regarding the sport's future engine specifications, particularly the potential shift to a naturally aspirated V8 engine post-2030, while maintaining a commitment to sustainable fuel. However, Döllner dismissed the idea of Audi funding a return of the German Grand Prix, stating that the company will provide for the racing team but not the event itself.
