Austin Slater, a veteran outfielder, has decided to opt out of his minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. Reports indicate that the team did not have plans to promote him to the majors, prompting Slater to seek a new opportunity with a contender ahead of the September 1 deadline for postseason eligibility.
At 33 years old, Slater has had a challenging season in the majors, recording a .231 batting average across 65 plate appearances with the Rays, Marlins, and Mets. His performance has been marked by three consecutive seasons of offensive difficulties, with a career batting line of .215/.301/.308 over 446 plate appearances since 2024. However, he has excelled in Triple-A, achieving a .305/.407/.453 batting line in 150 plate appearances with the Rays' affiliate in Durham.
Despite his struggles in the majors, Slater has a solid track record against left-handed pitchers, boasting a .263/.353/.420 line in 1,087 career plate appearances against them. He has experience playing all three outfield positions and first base, although he is primarily viewed as a corner outfielder and first baseman at this stage of his career. Teams like the Blue Jays, Pirates, Mariners, Guardians, and Phillies, which have faced challenges against left-handed pitching, may consider adding him as they look to strengthen their rosters.
