Australia Launches Surfing Super League for Team-Based Competition
Australia has officially launched the Surfing Super League (SSL), a new domestic competition aimed at revolutionizing professional surfing with a team-based format. The inaugural season is set to commence in January 2028, taking place over eight weekends along the East Coast.
The SSL will feature eight teams and 48 contracted surfers, including notable athletes such as Olympic medalist Owen Wright and big-wave record holder Laura Enever. Each team will consist of four men and two women, representing various Australian surfing regions.
This league marks a shift from the traditional individual competition style, as teams will compete in a relay format, allowing for continuous action and strategic gameplay. The SSL aims to enhance the viewing experience for audiences and provide equal pay for all contracted surfers, with salaries starting at $89,000 for the season.
