Avalanche's Sakic Confident Makar Will Sign Extension Before Season

Joe Sakic, the president of hockey operations for the Colorado Avalanche, has expressed optimism regarding Cale Makar's contract situation. In a report released on Monday, Sakic stated he is confident that Makar will secure a new deal before the start of the 2026-27 NHL season.

Makar, who is entering the final year of a six-year, $54 million contract, has been eligible for an extension since July 1. Sakic noted that discussions have been positive and he anticipates an agreement will be reached before training camp begins. If Makar does not sign by September 15, the maximum length of a new deal would be limited to seven years under the NHL's collective bargaining agreement.

Currently, Makar is a two-time Norris Trophy winner and was part of the Avalanche team that won the Stanley Cup in 2021-22. He recorded 79 points in 75 games last season. If he remains unsigned after the 2026-27 season, he would become an unrestricted free agent. Sakic also mentioned that he has no concerns about the team's health heading into training camp.
