Backup Quarterbacks Eye Starting Roles in NFL
As the NFL season begins, several teams are starting with veteran quarterbacks while younger backups are waiting for their chance. Three backup quarterbacks, Fernando Mendoza, Carson Beck, and Shedeur Sanders, are in positions that could see them take over starting roles before midseason.
Fernando Mendoza, selected by the Las Vegas Raiders, is currently behind Kirk Cousins. While Mendoza has shown promise during the preseason, including a touchdown pass, his opportunity to start may depend on Cousins' performance. If the Raiders struggle, the team may reconsider keeping Mendoza on the sidelines.
Carson Beck has made a strong impression during the preseason with the Arizona Cardinals, completing 15 of 19 passes in a game against the Carolina Panthers. Although Jacoby Brissett is expected to start, Beck's performance has raised questions about whether he could be given a chance if the team's offense falters. Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders is positioned as a backup to Deshaun Watson with the Cleveland Browns. Despite losing the starting competition, Sanders remains close enough to take over if Watson underperforms or is injured. All three quarterbacks have realistic chances to step into starting roles as the season unfolds.
