Baker Mayfield Returns with Custom Glove from Rays After Injury
Baker Mayfield, the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is making his comeback this week against the Carolina Panthers after missing three games due to a right thumb injury.
To assist in his return, Mayfield received a custom glove from the Tampa Bay Rays' training staff. The Buccaneers collaborated with Nike to create a protective glove similar to one made for MLB player Mike Trout. The Rays, currently competing in the 2026 World Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, sent an equipment staff member to help modify the glove for Mayfield.
Clubhouse attendant Nick Bond adjusted a wide receiver glove by removing material around the thumb and adding a protective insert. Two versions of the glove were created: one with hard plastic and another resembling a soft cast. Mayfield noted that the glove does not restrict his movement and feels comfortable. Despite the Buccaneers' struggles this season, with a record of 1-5, there remains hope due to the competitive nature of the NFC South.
