Bangladesh Premier League Suspended Amid Corruption and Financial Issues
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to suspend the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for this year, citing the need for a restructuring of the tournament. BCB president Tamim Iqbal announced this decision, highlighting that several franchises did not adhere to the league's rules.
The BPL, which started in 2012, is Bangladesh's premier domestic T20 tournament but has faced challenges in achieving the success seen in other countries' leagues. Tamim noted that the BCB has incurred losses of approximately $3.3 million over the past two years due to unpaid dues and issues with bank guarantees.
In recent months, the BPL has been marred by controversies, including a betting probe that led to the suspension of a player and multiple officials. Tamim expressed understanding of the players' disappointment but emphasized the importance of rebuilding the tournament to restore its integrity and profitability. Discussions with existing franchises are underway, with plans to complete the franchise selection process by mid-next year.
