Basket Zaragoza Challenges Aday Mara's Move to Oklahoma City Thunder
Aday Mara's transition to the Oklahoma City Thunder is facing opposition from Basket Zaragoza, the Spanish club where he began his professional career. Zaragoza announced its challenge on Friday, asserting that Mara remains under contract until the 2026-27 season and will not permit him to play for the Thunder, who selected him with the 12th pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
The club stated that it has not received a formal request for Mara's international transfer and would reject any such request. They have communicated their stance to the Thunder, the NBA, FIBA, and the Spanish Basketball Federation. While FIBA does not mandate an international transfer for NCAA players, it does for other professional leagues.
According to Spanish newspaper Heraldo de Aragon, Zaragoza is pursuing a financial settlement, claiming to hold Mara's playing rights and intending to block his international clearance until an agreement is reached. The situation has escalated to litigation without a legal resolution. The Thunder, however, maintain that no clearance from Zaragoza is necessary for Mara to participate in the NBA, citing his prior NCAA experience.
