Bayley McKenna to Lead Australia as First Non-Disabled Captain in Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup
Bayley McKenna is set to become the first non-disabled captain of the Wheelaroos at the 2026 Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup, which begins in Wollongong. At 26, he is also the youngest captain of Australia's wheelchair rugby league team.
McKenna's journey in wheelchair sport began in 2006 when his father became a wheelchair user after an accident. Together, they participated in various wheelchair sports, eventually finding their way to wheelchair rugby league. This sport uniquely allows non-disabled players to compete alongside those with disabilities, fostering inclusion at all levels.
Despite his achievements, McKenna has faced online abuse regarding his participation as a non-disabled athlete. He is prepared for potential negativity during the upcoming tournament but feels supported by his teammates and family. The World Cup is expected to provide significant exposure for wheelchair rugby league, which McKenna hopes will encourage more participation from disabled athletes.
