BCCI Considers Expanding Women's Premier League Teams
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating an expansion of the Women's Premier League (WPL) by adding more teams starting next year. This decision aims to create additional opportunities for women cricketers, as stated by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia.
Saikia highlighted that many players were left out during the recent WPL 2027 auction, which prompted discussions about increasing the number of teams. Currently, the league features five teams, but with around 150 players vying for spots, the existing structure is deemed insufficient.
Plans for the 2027 season, scheduled from January 14 to February 7, include brainstorming sessions to address team expansion and other areas for improvement. Saikia noted that adding one or two teams and increasing player budgets could provide more domestic players with opportunities to compete at higher levels.
