BCCI to Standardize Fitness Tests Following Player Injuries
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to standardize fitness testing protocols, specifically the Bronco and 2K tests, in response to frequent player injuries observed during the recent England tour. The medical team at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru has identified inconsistent fitness assessments as a key factor contributing to these issues.
After a change in the strength and conditioning coach, the BCCI decided to prioritize the Bronco test over the Yo-Yo test for evaluating player fitness. A new benchmark of 5.15-5.20 minutes has been established for the Bronco test, while the 2K running test will have a target completion time of 9-10 minutes. This shift comes after it was noted that some senior players were given easier targets, leading to discrepancies in fitness levels.
Concerns have been raised regarding the communication breakdown between the CoE and the team management, particularly regarding the new fitness drills. Players like Mohammed Siraj were reportedly unprepared for the updated testing protocols. The CoE has faced criticism for not adequately preparing players, including Jasprit Bumrah, for upcoming matches. The BCCI aims to rectify these issues to enhance player readiness and fitness standards moving forward.
