Ben Pritchard Aims for World Title Defense After European Championship Win

Welsh Para-rower Ben Pritchard is set to compete in the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam later this month, following his recent victory at the European Rowing Championships in Varese, Italy. The 34-year-old athlete overcame a pre-event injury to secure his title in the PR1 men's single sculls, defeating Italian competitor Giacomo Perini.

Pritchard faced a challenging situation when a malfunction caused him to fall from a hoist upon arrival in Italy, resulting in an injury he managed throughout the competition. Despite this setback, he described the race as one of the best he has experienced in recent years, noting the intense competition leading up to the final stretch.

Currently, Pritchard and his Great Britain teammates are finalizing their preparations in Varese before heading to Amsterdam for the championships scheduled from August 24 to 30. He expressed confidence in the training camp's ability to enhance their speed and mentioned his awareness of strong competition, including Australian rower Erik Horrie. Pritchard also shared a personal motivation for his recent success, reflecting on the emotional support from his coach, who recently experienced a family loss.
