Bernie Kosar Discusses Family's Impact on His Bankruptcy
Bernie Kosar, a former NFL player, revealed that his financial difficulties began prior to his bankruptcy filing in 2009. In his book Learning to Scramble, he noted that decisions made by family members significantly impacted his opportunities.
Kosar cautioned young athletes against involving relatives in financial matters, sharing his experience of allowing family members to handle business dealings while he focused on football. He recounted a failed opportunity for a 5% ownership stake in the Cleveland Browns, which ended abruptly after his father insulted the team's owner.
Despite achieving a peak net worth of approximately $75 million, Kosar faced substantial financial setbacks due to poor business decisions made by his family and a costly divorce settlement. These challenges ultimately led him to file for bankruptcy in 2009.
