Beth Dobbin Urges Increased Funding for ME Research
Former British sprinter Beth Dobbin has reached out to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, requesting enhanced funding for research into myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), a condition that has severely impacted her life, confining her to bed for 22 hours a day.
In a recent interview, Dobbin, who competed in the Tokyo Olympics, shared her diagnosis of ME, a chronic illness characterized by debilitating fatigue, cognitive issues, and various other symptoms. She highlighted the lack of government funding for ME research compared to other illnesses, noting that over 400,000 people in the UK are affected, with many requiring extensive care.
In her letter, Dobbin emphasized the urgent need for research funding to develop treatments and improve support for severe ME patients, who often find themselves without adequate care options within the NHS. She pointed out that the government has committed to reducing welfare costs, suggesting that investing in ME research could alleviate some of the burden on welfare services.
