Big Ten Commissioner Optimistic About College Football Playoff Expansion
Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti shared his optimism on the expansion of the College Football Playoff (CFP) to 24 teams during remarks made at the Big Ten men's basketball media day in Rosemont, Illinois. He noted that the exclusive negotiating window with ESPN, originally set to close, has been extended.
Petitti emphasized that a key challenge in expanding the playoff format is addressing the revenue loss from eliminating conference championship games. He mentioned that ESPN needs to develop a financial package that accommodates this change, while also ensuring that all conferences involved are financially supported.
In addition to discussing the playoff expansion, Petitti advocated for the Protect College Sports Act, which is currently stalled in the House after passing the Senate with bipartisan support. He clarified that the Big Ten is not considering any expansion of its own at this time.
