Big Ten Implements $49 Million NIL Spending Cap for Member Schools
On Wednesday, the Big Ten announced a new policy that sets a $49 million cap on NIL spending for its member schools, effective immediately. This decision aligns with the framework of the Protect College Sports Act, which is pending a vote in the House of Representatives.
The spending cap is divided into two categories: a revenue-sharing limit of $21.6 million and a $27.5 million cap on third-party NIL expenditures. The Big Ten council of chancellors emphasized the need for member institutions to prepare financially in anticipation of the act's potential passage.
While the Protect College Sports Act aims to allow schools to spend around $50 million on athlete payments, its future remains uncertain. The House is currently in recess, with a potential vote on the act expected after November 9. Any changes to the bill could complicate its chances of becoming law, as it would need to return to the Senate for approval.
