Big Ten Implements Rule Against Players with Pro Contracts Returning to College Football
The Big Ten has taken a significant step by becoming the first conference to implement a rule that prevents football players who have signed professional contracts from returning to compete at its institutions. The rule specifically targets players who have been on a professional roster or declared for the NFL draft without withdrawing. This move follows recent controversies, including a court ruling that allowed former Mississippi tight end Dae’Quan Wright to seek eligibility at LSU, despite changes in NCAA rules affecting high school graduates from 2022.
Wake Forest's athletic director indicated that discussions among conference leaders regarding this issue are ongoing. Other conferences, including the SEC, have expressed opposition to the idea of professional athletes returning to college sports, citing concerns about competitive equity and the integrity of college athletics.
