Birkenhead's 'Wotsit Street' Traffic Measures to Be Removed
The bright orange traffic calming measures on Grange Street West in Birkenhead, which earned the nickname 'Wotsit Street', are set to be removed following significant local backlash. Residents described the markings as a 'diabolical mess' and criticized the £300,000 scheme introduced in 2025.
Wirral Council leader Paula Basnett admitted the design was not suitable for the area and has instructed that the features be taken down by the end of the month. The council plans to donate the street furniture and planters to local schools and community groups.
Basnett acknowledged that while traffic calming measures are necessary, the current design has been ridiculed on social media and has negatively impacted the area's image. The council will cover the costs of removing the paint and redesigning the street, although the final expenses have not yet been disclosed.
