Birmingham City, Crystal Palace, and Charlton Athletic Join Women's Super League

Birmingham City, Crystal Palace, and Charlton Athletic have been promoted to the Women's Super League (WSL) for the 2026-27 season, expanding the league to 14 teams for the first time. The season kicks off with London City Lionesses facing Manchester United on Friday evening.

Birmingham City returns to the WSL after winning the WSL 2 title last season, edging out Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic on goal difference. The team has made six new signings, including experienced defender Millie Turner, who will captain the side. Striker Lily Crosthwaite was named WSL 2 player of the year.

Crystal Palace, back in the top flight after a season in WSL 2, aims to build on their strong performance last season, bolstered by the addition of former Lioness Bethany England. Charlton Athletic, who last played in the top flight 18 years ago, secured their promotion through a play-off victory against Leicester City. The three newcomers face challenges ahead, with projections suggesting a competitive battle to avoid relegation.
