BKFC to Discontinue Flyweight Division Amid Competition Issues
Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) has announced the permanent discontinuation of its 125 lbs flyweight division, as stated by president David Feldman. This decision follows the upcoming fight of flyweight champion John Dodson, who will move up to 135 lbs to face Jamel Herring at BKFC 95 on October 17th.
Feldman explained that the lack of sufficient competition at the flyweight level made it impractical to maintain the division. Currently, BKFC has only 37 fighters listed in the flyweight category, a stark contrast to the bantamweight division, which boasts 117 fighters. Dodson, who won the inaugural flyweight title in August 2023, has seen limited activity since his victory, further highlighting the division's struggles.
In light of these challenges, BKFC plans to focus its resources on the bantamweight division. The promotion will host a unique event aboard a cruise ship in January 2027, although flyweight fighters will not participate. This marks the first time BKFC has eliminated an entire weight class, a move that reflects broader trends in combat sports.
