BMW Championship Preview: Key Players Need Strong Performances to Advance
The BMW Championship, the second event in the PGA Tour FedExCup playoffs, is set to begin Thursday at Bellerive Country Club near St. Louis, marking its first hosting since 2008. This tournament is known for its unpredictability as it rotates locations each year, with the top 50 players in points competing for a chance to advance to the Tour Championship.
Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay, both former winners, are currently outside the top 30 and need to finish at least seventh to qualify for the next round. Thomas, who won the BMW Championship in 2019, is ranked 44th and has only achieved a T-4 finish this year. Cantlay, the 2021 and 2022 champion, is in 32nd place and has not finished higher than T-7 this season.
Bellerive, a par 70 course measuring 7,448 yards, is known for its challenging layout, including deep bunkers and thick rough. The defending champion, Scottie Scheffler, recently won the FedEx St. Jude Championship and aims to continue his strong performance. The course has a rich history, having hosted several major tournaments, including the U.S. Open and PGA Championships.
