BMW Declines Formula 1 Entry, Prefers Sportscar Racing
BMW has confirmed its ongoing disinterest in entering Formula 1, emphasizing that sportscar racing aligns better with its corporate philosophy.
The Munich-based automaker has been absent from F1 since selling its majority stake in Sauber in 2009, despite the sport's rising appeal among car manufacturers. Other brands, including Audi and Cadillac, have recently joined the series, but BMW remains the only major German manufacturer not pursuing an F1 entry.
BMW M boss Frank van Meel stated that Formula 1 does not fit the company's approach, which focuses on technology transfer from racing to production vehicles. He noted that while customers enjoy F1, they prefer motorsport that is more closely related to production cars. BMW continues to engage in sportscar racing, with its M Hybrid V8 competing in the World Endurance Championship and IMSA SportsCar Championship, which allows for direct technology transfer to production models.
