BMW's Philosophy Shift Leads to Improved Performance in IMSA
As the 2026 IMSA season commenced, BMW faced significant pressure after three years of limited success. The introduction of an updated package for the M Hybrid V8 was crucial for the team's performance.
The BMW M Team WRT, having transitioned from RLL to WRT, experienced a challenging start but ultimately saw improvements throughout the season. Marco Wittmann noted that the team focused on enhancing the car's durability and drivability, which led to better race consistency despite a decline in qualifying performance.
Victories in the FIA WEC, including at Spa-Francorchamps and Sao Paulo, highlighted the effectiveness of the revised approach. However, the team struggled with performance consistency in IMSA, often having one car perform well while the other lagged. Wittmann acknowledged the need for better luck and teamwork as they prepare for the 2027 season, aiming to build on their progress.
