Boston Red Sox Designate Ryan Watson for Assignment

The Boston Red Sox have designated right-handed reliever Ryan Watson for assignment, a decision made to create space in the bullpen after an active trade deadline.

This move comes as the team aims to enhance its roster for a postseason push. Watson, who stands at 6 feet 5 inches, joined the Red Sox earlier this year after being selected in the Rule 5 Draft and was acquired from the Athletics in exchange for Justin Reimer and cash considerations. Throughout the season, he maintained a 1-0 record with a 4.53 ERA over 35 appearances, converting one save opportunity.

The Red Sox have brought in left-hander Erik Miller from the San Francisco Giants as a higher-upside alternative. Miller has recorded a 2-0 record with a 2.76 ERA in 38 games this season. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow noted that Miller's addition aims to strengthen the bullpen for the late-season schedule. The team also made other acquisitions, including outfielder Carlos Gutierrez and catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles, as they seek to improve their standing in the American League East, where they currently sit third with a 60-51 record.
