Braden Smith Will Not Return to College Basketball Following Eligibility Ruling
Braden Smith, a former All-American from Purdue, has confirmed he will not pursue a return to college basketball after a recent ruling that permits an additional year of eligibility for the Class of 2022. His representatives at Priority Sports communicated this decision to CBS Sports.
Smith was selected as the No. 38 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls, who subsequently traded his rights to the Indiana Pacers. He is among five second-round draft picks yet to sign a rookie contract. While some of his peers are considering their college options, Smith's collegiate career is concluded.
NCAA president Charlie Baker has stated that players who have signed any NBA contract, including two-way deals, will not be eligible to return to college basketball. Smith's delay in signing a contract is attributed to financial constraints faced by the Pacers, along with his desire for a guaranteed deal. Indiana's general manager, Chad Buchanan, noted the team's tight salary cap situation as they evaluate options for their roster.
Smith leaves a remarkable legacy as one of the most accomplished point guards in NCAA history, holding the record for career assists and being the only player to achieve over 1,500 points, 1,000 assists, and 500 rebounds. With his departure from college basketball confirmed, Purdue's coach Matt Painter is likely to turn to Omer Mayer and Luke Ertel for the starting point guard position.
