Brandon Woodruff Begins Throwing Progression, Eyes Return in 2026
Brandon Woodruff has announced plans to begin a five-week throwing progression starting Wednesday, with hopes of returning to pitch for the Milwaukee Brewers before the end of the 2026 season. This development follows tests in early August that indicated sufficient healing in his right shoulder, leading doctors to determine that surgery was unnecessary.
This season, Woodruff has only pitched 45 1/3 innings due to injuries, including a cyst in his labrum and an anterior shoulder capsule issue. He previously underwent capsule surgery in 2023, which sidelined him for the entire 2024 season.
While the Brewers currently hold the best record in baseball, Woodruff's return remains uncertain, as he may not be ready in time for the postseason. Manager Pat Murphy acknowledged the slim chance of Woodruff's return but expressed hope for positive news. The Brewers are considering various pitching options for the playoffs, with Woodruff potentially serving as a reliever to minimize strain on his arm.
