Braves Release Jorge Mateo After Designation for Assignment

The Atlanta Braves have released Jorge Mateo, an infielder and outfielder, following his designation for assignment last week. Mateo is now available to sign with any team.

Mateo, 31, joined the Braves in January on a one-year contract worth $1 million. His signing coincided with the injury of Ha-Seong Kim, who required surgery for a torn tendon and was expected to miss several months. Mateo was initially brought in to fill the shortstop position alongside Mauricio Dubón.

During his time with Atlanta, Mateo recorded a batting average of .240 with a wRC+ of 80, contributing mainly through his speed and defensive skills. After Kim returned from the injured list, Mateo's playing time diminished, leading to his release. The Braves will continue to pay his salary, while any new team signing him will only need to cover the prorated league minimum.
