Braves' Schwellenbach and Waldrep to Undergo Season-Ending Surgeries

Two right-handed pitchers for the Atlanta Braves, Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep, are set to undergo season-ending surgeries after experiencing setbacks in their recovery from elbow injuries.

The Braves announced that Waldrep will need Tommy John surgery, which may keep him out until the 2027 season. Schwellenbach, who had surgery to remove bone spurs from his elbow earlier this year, will have another procedure to address additional spurs. Both players reported discomfort during recent throwing sessions, prompting MRIs that led to the surgical recommendations.

Manager Walt Weiss indicated that the chances of right-hander Spencer Strider returning this season are diminishing, noting that time is running out. He expressed surprise at the need for surgeries for Schwellenbach and Waldrep, despite their progress in throwing. The Braves are currently preparing for the playoffs, and the absence of these pitchers could impact their rotation depth.
