Brendan Venter Critiques Media Obligations in Rugby
Brendan Venter, the head of culture and technical director for Saracens, voiced his concerns about the media obligations in Premiership Rugby, likening them to practices found in autocratic regimes. His comments came during a press conference where he appeared alongside head coach Joe Shaw to discuss the team's upcoming match against Bristol.
Venter, who returned to Saracens this summer, faced a £5,000 fine for missing a pre-season media event and had previously avoided media interactions following the club's opening win against Leicester. During the press conference, he initially provided brief responses before expressing his discomfort with being the club's public representative, emphasizing that his focus should be on coaching rather than media appearances.
Despite his reservations, Venter acknowledged his passion for coaching and the camaraderie within the team, which motivated his return to Saracens. He expressed a desire to dominate the league rather than merely compete, setting high ambitions for the team's performance this season.
