Brent Venables Signs Contract Extension with Oklahoma Through 2031
Brent Venables, the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, has signed a six-year contract extension that will keep him with the team until 2031. This decision comes as he prepares for his fifth season, during which he has yet to win a College Football Playoff game and holds a 1-3 record against Texas in the Red River Rivalry.
Under the new agreement, Venables will earn $10.5 million annually, making him the 11th-highest-paid coach in college football. Oklahoma's athletic director, Roger Denny, emphasized the importance of stability in the program and praised Venables for his ability to build trust and culture among players.
Since taking over in 2022, Venables has achieved a 32-20 record, including a 10-3 season last year, where the Sooners reached the CFP but lost to Alabama. Despite facing challenges, including player departures to USC, he has yet to secure a signature win or an SEC title, raising concerns among fans about his ability to compete at the highest level.
