Brent Venables Signs Two-Year Extension with Oklahoma
Brent Venables, the head coach of Oklahoma, has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the program until January 2032. The announcement was made on Thursday.
Since taking over after Lincoln Riley's departure, Venables has led the Sooners to a 32-20 overall record, including one appearance in the College Football Playoff. The team finished its first season in the SEC with a 6-7 record, but improved to 10-3 in the following season, marking its first double-digit win season under his leadership.
Athletic director Roger Denny highlighted Venables' ability to build a strong culture within the program, emphasizing the importance of his leadership for future recruiting efforts. Venables has successfully attracted talent, including transfer quarterback John Mateer, who had a notable first season with 2,885 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. The Sooners are also enhancing their defense with new recruits. The team is set to begin its 2026 season at home against UTEP on September 4.
