Brewers Re-Sign Infielder Jonathan Ornelas to Minor League Deal
The Milwaukee Brewers have re-signed infielder Jonathan Ornelas to a minor league contract, as reported by Francys Romero. Ornelas will join Triple-A Nashville.
After being waived by the Brewers last week, Ornelas opted for free agency. He had been acquired in a minor league trade with the Athletics shortly before his waiver. His role was primarily as a depth infielder while Cooper Pratt was sidelined with a hamstring strain, but Pratt's return limited Ornelas's opportunities.
In his brief time with the Brewers, Ornelas played three games, achieving two hits in nine at-bats, along with four strikeouts. He previously appeared in six games with the Athletics this season, totaling 41 career games across four teams. Despite a challenging batting average of .203 in the majors, he has excelled in Triple-A this season, boasting a .310 average with 11 home runs and stolen bases. The Brewers' decision to re-sign him comes just before the deadline for postseason eligibility, although he may need injuries among the current infielders to secure a spot in October. If not recalled to the majors, he will become a minor league free agent this offseason.
