Brian McDermott Advocates for NRL Investment in Super League
Brian McDermott, the head coach of England's rugby league team, has urged Super League to embrace investment from Australia's NRL to bolster the English game. This call comes after Super League clubs declined a £35 million investment proposal from the Australian Rugby League Commission, allowing a second deadline to pass without reaching an agreement.
McDermott, who also serves as an assistant coach for the Gold Coast Titans, believes that NRL investment could significantly benefit Super League. He emphasized that the quality of the product and the players is not the issue, but rather how the game is marketed and presented. He noted that a partnership could lead to increased revenue for the European competition.
Currently, Super League is facing challenges, including the lack of a new title sponsorship deal and unresolved broadcast negotiations. The financial disparity between the NRL and Super League was highlighted by the NRL's recent record $5.3 billion television deal. McDermott pointed out that financial support from the NRL could enhance the talent pool available for future England teams.
