Browns Acquire Cornerback Mekhi Blackmon from Colts
The Cleveland Browns have announced the acquisition of cornerback Mekhi Blackmon off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts. This transaction will be finalized on Friday, with Blackmon taking the roster spot of wide receiver Cedric Tillman, who was waived on Thursday.
This marks the second consecutive late-summer transition for Blackmon, who was traded to the Colts from the Vikings last August. After missing his second season due to a torn ACL, the Vikings deemed him expendable despite having used a third-round pick on him in 2023.
During his time with the Colts, Blackmon led the team's cornerbacks in defensive snaps, totaling 783, although injuries to other players contributed to his heavy workload. Over 17 games and 11 starts, he recorded 64 tackles, seven passes defensed, and two interceptions. However, he received a low coverage grade from Pro Football Focus. In Cleveland, Blackmon is expected to provide depth, particularly in the slot, but will not start as long as Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell remain healthy.
