Browns' QB Competition: Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson to Start Preseason Games
On Tuesday, Todd Monken, the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, announced that quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson will each start one preseason game as they vie for the starting quarterback position.
Following the initial training camp practices, Browns reporter Zac Jackson noted that both quarterbacks have struggled, with Watson displaying erratic performance and Sanders facing issues with pre-snap penalties despite having some strong throwing days. Rookie Taylen Green is becoming more comfortable but has had limited opportunities, while Dillon Gabriel has shown consistent accuracy but has also thrown several interceptions. Currently, Sanders appears to be leading the competition, although the coaching staff's plans for the upcoming weeks remain uncertain.
The Browns will kick off their preseason against the Chicago Bears on August 15, followed by a game against the Buffalo Bills on August 22. Gabriel may also see playing time in these games, and there is a possibility he could start against Buffalo if he performs better than Sanders and Watson in the coming weeks. The competition for the starting role may continue through the preseason finale against the New England Patriots on August 27.
