Bryan Baker Transforms into All-Star Closer for the Rays
The Tampa Bay Rays faced a challenging closer situation at the start of the 2026 season, following the departure of Pete Fairbanks, who had been the team's primary closer since 2023. With Fairbanks signing with the Marlins, the Rays sought to fill this vacancy and considered several candidates, including Bryan Baker, who was acquired in a trade with the Orioles in July 2025.
Baker, who had previously been a middle reliever, emerged as an All-Star closer, tying for the league lead in saves with 41. He recorded a 1.44 ERA over 65 innings during the regular season and continued to excel in the playoffs, notably closing out three victories against the Yankees in the ALDS.
His transformation into a top closer was largely attributed to an increase in changeup usage, which rose from 22.2% to 43.8% this season, effectively replacing his slider. This strategic adjustment has allowed Baker to limit right-handed hitters significantly, contributing to his success. The Rays have him under team control for the next two seasons, and while some regression is expected, he has solidified his position as a leading closer in the American League.
