BWF Confirms India Open Schedule Amid Pollution Concerns
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has decided to keep the India Open in its early-year schedule, despite concerns regarding air pollution in Delhi. Secretary General Thomas Lund stated that rescheduling the tournament beyond the first quarter of 2027 is not feasible due to tight calendar constraints.
The India Open, a Super 750 event, has been shifted from January to February for next year, with the 2027 edition planned for February 2-7 at the Indira Gandhi indoor stadium. However, it will revert to its original January dates in 2028.
Lund acknowledged the pollution issues, particularly highlighted by Danish player Anders Antonsen, who has skipped the tournament for three consecutive years due to air quality concerns. He noted that while pollution levels may decrease later in January and February, logistical challenges prevent a complete rescheduling at this time.
