This deal, revealed on Friday, sets a new record in the NHL for both total and annual contract value, with Makar becoming the league's first player to surpass the $20 million salary threshold.

At 27, Makar is recognized as one of the top defensemen in the NHL, having won the Norris Trophy twice and playing a crucial role in the Avalanche's Stanley Cup victory, which earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy. In the previous season, he recorded 20 goals and 59 assists over 75 games, leading all defensemen in points since his NHL debut in 2019.

Makar's new contract will begin in the 2026-27 season, resulting in a substantial salary cap impact for the Avalanche. However, the team has secured all its core players through at least 2031. The NHL's salary landscape is evolving, as evidenced by recent high-value contracts, including those for Leo Carlsson and Connor Bedard.
