Caleb Williams Avoids Fine for Unauthorized Cleats in Week 7
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams faced an $11,941 fine from the NFL for wearing shoes with an unauthorized logo during Week 6 against Atlanta. In Week 7, he continued to wear the same Caddix brand cleats, which lack a licensing agreement with the league.
Despite wearing the Caddix shoes again, Williams has not yet received a fine for Week 7. The NFL typically issues fines the following Tuesday after the game. Williams has expressed that he prioritizes his health and believes the cleats, designed to reduce tension on joints, contribute to his performance and longevity in the sport.
The NFL did not penalize Williams for wearing Caddix cleats during the preseason or the first two weeks of the regular season. Although Caddix intends to cover any fines incurred by Williams, league rules generally restrict such payments to the fined individual. This situation presents a challenge for the NFL, balancing the interests of licensed shoe companies with player safety concerns.
