Calls for Revamping the Asian Champions Trophy in Hockey
The men’s Asian Champions Trophy is currently underway, revealing a significant gap between India and the other teams. This disparity raises questions about the tournament's relevance, particularly for India, and the future of Asian hockey.
Initially established in 2011 to foster competition among Asian teams, the tournament has seen a decline in the continent's presence in global rankings. In 2011, three Asian teams were in the top ten, but now only India ranks within that group, with Pakistan, Malaysia, and Japan trailing behind.
To enhance the tournament's competitiveness, suggestions have been made to expand it to include teams from outside Asia, potentially creating an Afro-Asian or Asia-Oceania competition. This change could attract stronger teams and support Hockey India's efforts to diversify international hockey events across the country. Despite the ongoing discussions, Hockey India officials have not provided comments on the matter.
