Callum Russell: GB Handcyclist and Model Competing at Para-Cycling World Championships
Callum Russell, a handcyclist and model representing Great Britain, is preparing to compete at the Para-Cycling Road World Championships in Alabama this weekend. Russell, who began his handcycling career in 2023, previously faced a life-altering injury in 2018 when he suffered a spinal injury during a mountain biking accident.
After the accident, Russell was paralyzed from the waist down and had to adapt to a new way of life. Initially, he struggled with handcycling but found success in rowing, earning a bronze medal at a World Cup in 2022. His interest in cycling was reignited after observing a teammate using a handcycle, leading him to switch sports and achieve a historic bronze medal in time trial at the World Championships in Belgium.
In addition to his athletic pursuits, Russell also works as a model, having signed with a talent agency shortly after his accident. He emphasizes the importance of embracing new opportunities and believes that life after injury can be fulfilling and full of possibilities.
