Campaigners Advocate for Expansion of Night Bus Service in Merseyside
The N1 night bus service connecting Liverpool and Wirral resumed operations in December 2023, and campaigners are now pushing for its expansion. They emphasize the service's importance for passenger safety and economic benefits, as highlighted in a recent report.
Since its launch, the N1, operated by Stagecoach, has facilitated nearly 60,000 journeys during early hours on weekends, with fares capped at £2. The report from the University of Liverpool's Institute of Popular Music indicates that for every £1 invested, the service generates approximately £4.93 in social and community value.
Despite its success, the report notes that limited promotion and infrequent service hinder its potential. Advocates, including Prof Mathew Flynn, stress the need for more frequent buses and expanded routes to better serve the community. The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is also working to enhance the bus network under public control to improve late-night transport options.
