Canada and USA Teams May Wear Generic Jerseys at Women's World Championship
The Canadian and U.S. women's hockey teams may appear in generic jerseys at the upcoming IIHF Women's World Championship due to a legal dispute regarding jersey rights. The tournament is set to begin on November 6 in Denmark, with Canada facing Sweden and the U.S. competing against Switzerland.
A report from The Athletic indicates that the two nations have been in a prolonged disagreement with the IIHF over the control of commercial rights for national team jerseys. Hockey Canada expressed the importance of wearing the Maple Leaf and hopes for a resolution with the IIHF that would allow the team to wear their traditional crest.
The IIHF had previously partnered with True Hockey to supply uniforms for all member nations, but it remains uncertain if this agreement was finalized. Both Hockey Canada and USA Hockey assert that they hold the commercial rights to their jerseys, citing IIHF bylaws that grant members rights to their logos and uniform designs.
