Canadian Study Investigates Maple Syrup as High-Carb Fuel for Athletes
A research team from the University of Montréal is exploring the potential of maple syrup as a high-carbohydrate fuel for athletes. The study aims to determine if athletes can oxidize maple syrup as effectively as conventional sports nutrition products.
Participants in the study, consisting of 32 elite male cyclists, are being tested on their performance while consuming varying amounts of diluted maple syrup, delivering up to 120 grams of carbohydrates per hour. This amount is considered the maximum that most athletes can safely absorb for energy.
The study is funded by the maple syrup producers' group in Quebec, which is interested in understanding the viability of maple syrup as an endurance fuel. While the results are not expected until several months later, the findings could influence how athletes approach their fueling strategies.
