Canadiens Enhance Defensive Strategy with Reinbacher's Return

BROSSARD, Que.— The Montreal Canadiens recently showcased their enhanced defensive strategy during a game against the Buffalo Sabres, featuring David Reinbacher in a lineup with three balanced lefty-righty defensive pairings.

Reinbacher, who was drafted fifth overall by the Canadiens in June 2023, has faced injury challenges but made his presence felt on the ice. His inclusion allows coach Martin St. Louis to utilize a more versatile defensive setup, which has been lacking since his coaching tenure began in February 2022.

The Canadiens have seen improvement in their penalty kill, moving from 24th to 12th in the league, despite missing key player Mike Matheson. The team attributes this success to better cohesion and an aggressive strategy implemented by assistant coach Derek Lalonde. Forward Alex Newhook noted the unit's growing trust in their system, which has contributed to their recent effectiveness.
