Capablanca Secures Gold at 1939 Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires
The 1939 Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires was marked by the backdrop of World War II, as Germany invaded Poland. Amidst this turmoil, the German team won the gold medal, finishing half a point ahead of Poland, while several matches were recorded as draws due to the war.
Capablanca, representing Cuba, remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, scoring 11½ points from 16 games. Although he did not face his rival Alexander Alekhine directly, he secured the gold medal for the best performance on board one, achieving 8½ points in the final group. Alekhine, playing for France, earned silver with 7½ points.
This Olympiad marked Capablanca's last competitive success before his death in 1942. He played his final tournament game against Brazilian player Octávio Trompowsky, winning by outmaneuvering his opponent in the middlegame.
