Cardinals Add Cade Winquest to Bullpen Roster
The St. Louis Cardinals announced the selection of right-hander Cade Winquest from Triple-A Memphis on Thursday. This move comes as right-hander Peter Strzelecki was placed on the 15-day injured list due to forearm inflammation, creating an opening on the 26-man roster.
Winquest, who nearly debuted in the majors earlier this season, was previously selected by the Yankees in the Rule 5 Draft but did not play in any games during his time with New York. After being designated for assignment and passing through waivers unclaimed, he returned to the Cardinals. Now, he joins the 40-man roster without the restrictions of the Rule 5 Draft, positioning him for a potential MLB debut.
At 26 years old, Winquest has made a strong impression in Triple-A, pitching 39 2/3 innings with a 4.54 ERA. Recently, he has excelled, recording 10 1/3 consecutive shutout innings with a 17-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His performance includes a 51.1% ground-ball rate, which aligns well with the Cardinals' defensive strengths. Winquest's fastball averages around 95 mph, and he is expected to make his major league debut soon.
