Cardinals Designate Ramón Urías and Peter Strzelecki for Assignment
The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Wednesday the designation for assignment of infielder Ramón Urías and right-hander Peter Strzelecki. This move comes as rookie JJ Wetherholt returns from the injured list.
Urías, who signed a one-year contract worth $2 million in February, has struggled with injuries throughout the season, primarily due to lateral epicondylitis. He has not performed well at the plate, recording a batting line of .151/.260/.326 over 100 plate appearances. The Cardinals will pay a $500,000 buyout on Urías' mutual option instead of exercising it.
Strzelecki, who has pitched 14 innings this season with a 5.79 ERA, will also be sent to waivers after not being added back to the active roster following his recovery from injury. His performance has declined since a strong debut in 2022, and he has faced challenges in the upper minors.
